  1. A balance is an apparatus for weighing or 
  2. measuring mass. The various types include the
  3. beam balance consisting of a centrally 
  4. pivoted lever with pans hanging from each 
  5. end, and the spring balance, in which the 
  6. object to be weighed stretches 
  7. (or compresses) a vertical coil spring fitted
  8. with a pointer that indicates the weight on a
  9. scale.  Kitchen and bathroom scales are
  10. modern balances.
